Can I change my pool light bulb myself or do I need an electrician?

I've read a few threads about changing a light bulb in your pool light but I am not sure that I can do it myself. I have an outdoor switch that turns it on and off. Do I just turn the switch off or do I need to turn all the electric off first? and I believe you have to disconnect some wires. Is it an electrician or a pool man that can do it for me and how much would a pool guy charge me. I am sure it's a 2 minute job but I don't think I can do it myself or can I?Can I change my pool light bulb myself or do I need an electrician?i own a pool company.do your self a favor, call a pool company and ask if they do that.they have pool techs that do that.they are certified and know what they are doing.you will have a lot less headaches.please dont try it your self.prices may very.it is not a two minute job, there are a lot of things that have to be done first pool techs have to go to school for that.very well trainedCan I change my pool light bulb myself or do I need an electrician? You can do it yourself. Turn it off, and if necessary, hang a sign on the switch so nobody will come along and turn it on while you are working there. If you are extra paranoid, you can pop the breaker, but off is off, and all you need is off. You should not have to disconnect wires as far as I know, but I have no lights in my pool. If you cannot figure it out, leave it alone. Make sure nobody is in the pool when you tuned the light back on, just in case.

GrandpaCan I change my pool light bulb myself or do I need an electrician?safer to replace the whole unit 250.00 or so... the seals are not ment to be reused.. but not without a fish tape...they have a water proof casing around the wires.. that cant get damaged or you're toast..but if you feel lucky ... get an electricians fish tape... attach it where ever the light wires connect. ALL POWER OFF TO THE POOL.... throw the breakers..fish tapes are steel..and can short out on another circiut in the switch box .. i have many dif. circuits goin to mine... just killing the power to the light isnt enough.. i still have for the spa pump spa lite , and heater pool pump and lights on one handy switch plate.that would still be live in there ... pull the wire out bringing fish tape into the pool... 2 man job here.. hook end of new cord to fish tape... one pulling the wire... and one to make sure the wire casing doesnt get cut or scraped by light retaining ring typiclly brass ...or cut by the conduit itself... good luck...Can I change my pool light bulb myself or do I need an electrician?Cathy

Shut the breaker off to the pool

Usually the pool light is held in with a philips screw or alan screw …..remove that from the bottom {the top part is held in with a lip} When you remove the screw the light will come out and there should be enough cord to set the light on the deck.

Once you remove the frame around the lens you need to pry the lens up {there is somewhat of a vacuum} when you break the vacuum {careful not to damage the rubber seal} you can remove the lens and get to the bulb.

When you get the new bulb pick up some “magic lube” to put around the seal before replacing it.

Before you replace the light hold it in the pool to check for bubbles, which would indicate that he seal is not tight and you need to open it up wipe out water and re-seal the lens again.

Light goes back in the same way …..

I always had to wear a weight belt {buoyancy issues} and at times I would put on my scuba gear especially when replacing the light. Can I change my pool light bulb myself or do I need an electrician? If it is below the water level, you may have to drain the pool at least below that level first. If you are uncomfortable doing it yourself, for sure, call an electrician, he is the pro for the job, not the pool guy. It may be a sealed unit that is watertight, turn off the switch and the circuit breaker. At worst it may need a new seal, not a complete unit. Time Capsule sounds like he knows what he is doing. I am just an electrician without that experience.
