I want to change a switch that now goes to an outlet to a double switch and add a fan (no light). How to wire?

I have a black, white and green wire at the switch currently.I want to change a switch that now goes to an outlet to a double switch and add a fan (no light). How to wire? Before you cut any holes in your wall, make sure you can fish you wiring from the ceiling fan location to the switch you are wanting to use. This will require drilling through your framing, and wall plates, ( 2X4 top plates ). If you can, then the new double switch will install the same as the existing switch. The hot lead coming to that switch should make both switches hot on the new double switch. If not, you will have to add a jumper ( black ) wire . You may have a %26quot;line%26quot; and %26quot;load%26quot; marking. If so, the hot jumper lead will go to line, your new black wire ( for fan ) will go to load. Your black wire goes to the gold terminal, your white wire will gang together with the existing white group. Green and bare copper go together. When you get to the fan, It should be the same, if your fan has a light, the blue wire will go to the black, for the light power. Be careful! If this is confusing, maybe you should have help.I want to change a switch that now goes to an outlet to a double switch and add a fan (no light). How to wire?Get a book if you are unsure.

It`s imporatant to calculate the load on the circuit. Usually only half of the outlet will be wired to the switch, so your solution might be at the outlet.I want to change a switch that now goes to an outlet to a double switch and add a fan (no light). • How would i make a switch for 3 lights?

Can you help. In class today we are asked to make a traffic light...but i need a switch. How would i make a switch to change the light each time i turn it off and on..or is there another way to do it. Let me know plz anything will help! How would i make a switch for 3 lights?you need a timer, as well as a sequencer, I think they are called, Because you need to program a sequence in. It also depends if it needs to be automated or you can run with switches

Im not sure about where you are, but in Aus, the traffice lights run

    RED

    GREEN

    AMBER

    RED.

You also need to have them automated, because someone doesnt sit there with a light, and flick a switch.

You may be able to cheat and use 2 switches.

    1 is a simple on/off switch,

    1 is a on/off/on swith.

I would wire the amber light to the on/off switch

and wire red and green to the on/off/on switch

Complicated to type, but you could then make the correct sequence.

    For instance.

Switch the switch forward to turn red light on.

Flick down to off, and again down to green

Flick to the middle to turn all lights off

    Flick the amber light on

    Flick the amber light off,

Flick the switch forward to turn red back onHow would i make a switch for 3 lights?hey liam

How do I fix the wiring to my light fixture?

The overhead light in my living room stopped working. I've tried all I can think of to fix it and would REALLY rather not have to call an electrician. I am fairly competant with home repairs and such, but I'm totally stumped.

So far I've tried changing the light fixture and changing the light switch. The breaker also controls the light in my kitchen, so I'm pretty sure it isn't the breaker or anything.

My attic is tiny...it goes over the LR light, but there's maybe 1'-2' clearance, so it'll be pretty hard to get up there, but I can if that's what it takes...

ANY help or ideas would be very appreciated. Thanks! How do I fix the wiring to my light fixture?Start at the beginning. Check for power at the switch. If there, then the fixture.

This does involve the use of a volt meter. If you don't know how to use one, you are already over your head and should call in an electrician. How do I fix the wiring to my light fixture?if you have an electrical tester (and you can buy an inexpensive one at any home improvement store) test to see if you have power at the switch or at the fixture If you do you know its not the wiring.....also do you have more then one switch in the room.....if you do make sure you replaced the switch with a three-way switch.....sometimes you may even have gotten a bad switch....if you feel comfortable working with wires you could just touch the two wires together in your switch and see if the light comes on then you know its the switchHow do I fix the wiring to my light fixture?Have you measured the voltage at the fixture wires? Voltage at the switch box? Checked the neutral connections in both locations? Is it a switch leg between the fixture and the switch or does the power pass through the switch box? Do you have grounds available in the boxes? Check voltage between hot and ground if there are. Finding the voltage is the secret to trouble shooting the circuit. Email if you need more help. How do I fix the wiring to my light fixture?Yes check the power in the box at the light with tester. Test power on the incoming power first then the switch leg.

The problem could be the switch. There are some cheap ones just like anything. But switches can wear out over time too.

Just be sure not to take the wires apart when checking them. Some people get confused by the way the switch leg works.

Or go to the local pub where alot of electricians hang out. Buy em a couple rounds for a peek at your line. (wink)How do I fix the wiring to my light fixture?Do you have power at the switch? Do you have power to the fixture? If so then probably you lost the neutral to the fixture. How do I fix the wiring to my light fixture?Sounds like the line feeding the switch has a problem.go to the hardware store and buy a simple circuit checker, with multi voltage capabilities. It will be a simple two prong tester with a glow bulb. Check both sides of the switch to make sure no power is coming to the switch. IF you have power to the switch the line to the light is the problem. No power to the switch the feed wire is the problem. A simple checking with tester will find the bad line then you go to the end of that line and find the problem.....George

How to change a double switch (1 for bathroom fan and 1 for light) to a single switch (for both fan and light)?

We currently have a double light switch in our bathroom -- one switch is for the fan, and the other is for the light. I want to change this to be one switch to cover both the fan and the light. There are separate boxes for each switch - how can I combine them into one switch? The drywall also will need to be extended to cover the hole created by having only one switch, but for now I'm just worried about the electrical aspect. Thanks for any suggestions on how to do this, or resources (websites, etc.) to tell me how to do this. How to change a double switch (1 for bathroom fan and 1 for light) to a single switch (for both fan and light)?Don't mess with the drywall. Just get a blank cover plate to cover the box. That said, the electrician is correct that having separate boxes is unusual. If you can move the wire from on box to the other, you would simply connect matching wires form both the light and the fan to the terminals on the switch. How to change a double switch (1 for bathroom fan and 1 for light) to a single switch (for both fan and light)?Actually, just use a wire nut to cap off the wire to the switch you don't need. You can connect the fan and the light to the hot from the switch you keep at the fixture.

How to change a double switch (1 for bathroom fan and 1 for light) to a single switch (for both fan and light)?I'm an electrician and find it surprising that there are separate switch boxes for your vent light. If the switches were in the same box, you would have an easy fix. However , with separate boxes you better consult a pro. If both boxes have a power supply coming in and out, you will be looking at a significant amount of work to eliminate one of the boxes. A simpler solution would be a blank cover. Hope this helps. How to change a double switch (1 for bathroom fan and 1 for light) to a single switch (for both fan and light)?I would personally hire a electrician to do this.

I changed a light switch, and now have no voltage. What happened?

My light worked. I replaced one of the three way switches that operated it using the wiring diagram provided. The new switch did not work when I turned the power back on. I tried the old switch again, it does not work. I removed both switches and tested only the exposed wires and found that I have essentially no voltage at that site all of the sudden. Every other light/receptical on that circuit works and has full voltage, except this one. What happened and how do I get voltage back to this light?I changed a light switch, and now have no voltage. What happened?try thisI changed a light switch, and now have no voltage. What happened? The box should have three wires into it plus a ground. You should have a black, white and red. On the three way switch you will see one screw painted black, this is for the black wire. Opposite the black screw you will see a brass colored screw, this is where the white wire is connected to and the red ties into the other brass screw. Is this doesn't work you will have to switch the white and red wires, called travellers. Does this box have other wires in it? This could be the feed side and then you will have to swap out the black wires, one will be alive. This one will go to the black screw and the black one removed will go to the light.I changed a light switch, and now have no voltage. What happened?if it wasn't broke, why did you fix it?

How to change a brake light switch in a honda accord? the lights dont turn off?

So my brake lights wont turn off in my 95 Honda Accord. I tired all the fuses in the box on the drivers side but could not locate another fuse box. I m thinking that the brake light switch is broken but I m wondering if thats easy to fix or if I get it taken in to fix is it expensive? How to change a brake light switch in a honda accord? the lights dont turn off?The switch should be fairly simple to replace... You would need to remove the panel on the underside of the dash that is above your feet when you are sitting in the driver's seat... The switch will be attached to a bracket with either screws or more than likely some plastic holders, remove the switch from the bracket and unplug the wiring from it. Installation is the reverse. P.S. if you are unsure of which switch it is: the switch you are looking for under there will come in contact with the brake pedal...How to change a brake light switch in a honda accord? the lights dont turn off?there is other one or two fuse box under the hoodHow to change a brake light switch in a honda accord? the lights dont turn off?get in your car slowly pull your break pedal back to you if they turn off reach under your dash and tighten the screw on the break light switch and if not replace itHow to change a brake light switch in a honda accord? the lights dont turn off?It can be a pain because they are usually way up in the dash as they contact with the brake lever. Unlees the contact got stuck I dont see how it can do that because they are only activated when the brake lever contacts it and that rarely happens that they get stuck but it can happen. It would be worthwhile for a mechanic to do it because it shouldn't be over 100 bucks.

How could a light switch spontaneously change what it does?

We have a light switch in our master bedroom that has always turned on all of the outside floodlights (which is convenient living out in the woods...). Near the front door of the house we have another switch that only turns on the floods on the front side of the house.

After years of this arrangement, the switch in the bedroom seems to have spontaneously changed and now only turns on the floods on the back half of the house!

So I've done a little bit of electrical work (new outlets, additional ones, etc.), but this is beyond my experience. What would cause this sort of thing to happen? The house was built in 1980-81 and is all copper wire.

Thanks! How could a light switch spontaneously change what it does? Are the blubs burned out int he lights that don't come on?

All the other answers are non-applicable until you cancel out the easy stuff.

EricHow could a light switch spontaneously change what it does?A wire connection seems to have come loose, it may be at the switch or farther down the circuit, depending on how it is wired. How could a light switch spontaneously change what it does? One of the switches has gone bad.How could a light switch spontaneously change what it does?Must be down to the other switch i would have thought, as it sounds like the power to the front must go through that switch as well, change the switch that controls the front lights, if that doesnt fix it then its Gremlins, buy a new house ...quick!!How could a light switch spontaneously change what it does? There may be a short in the wires that run from the switch to the lights in the front. The short must have happened when the lights were on, so now the information from the switch is not turning them off.How could a light switch spontaneously change what it does?Sounds like there is probably a loose or free wire to me. You'll need to open up the switch box to find out. There should be a parallel path from the switch that turns on both sets of lights and the switch that just turns on the front lights so when you open it up make sure that both breakers are open. How could a light switch spontaneously change what it does?So I have some questions:

When you turned on the lights from the front door, was it always putting the switch up for on and down for off?

When you turned on the lights from the back door, was it always putting the switch up for on and down for off?

If the answers to these questions are yes then there is no three way switches involved. You do not mention if you have taken apart the switch in the bedroom, is it possible that it is a double pole single throw switch? And the half that is controlling the front lights is defective?

What would happen if you turned on the lights at the front door and then turned on the lights at the bedroom, could you turn out all of the lights from the bedroom, or did you have to go to the front door to turn off the front lights?

Are you the original owners or did you buy from someone else?

What I am assuming is that the back lights were controlled directly by the bedroom switch. I am also assuming that the front lights were controlled by an electronic device containing a relay which could be operated by either the front door switch or the bedroom switch. As someone suggested the wire from the bedroom to the electronic device has become defective. There could be two relays and one of them (controlled by the bedroom switch) is no longer functioning.

    Good luck.

Light switch won't control light fixture anymore?

I changed a light fixture in my room. The light switch had controlled both of the light fixtures in the room, and now it will only control one. The other light just stays on all the time. It is a ceiling light, so there isn't a switch on the actual light fixture. How can I get the light switch to control both lights again??Light switch won't control light fixture anymore? This is simply a guess so bear with me. Did you plug the light fixture into the wrong plug? For instance, our switch controls both TOP receptacles but the bottom ones are on all the time. In other words, go plug the fixture into the bottom plug if it's plugged into the top one and vice versa.

Light switch won't control light fixture anymore? If I understand this correctly,

you shoud have 2 sets of wires(black, white, then ground) if there are 2 fixtures on same switch. the white wires are travelers and should be wired together. You then should be left with 2 black wires(hot) they should go to the fixure, it doesn't matter which wire as all your doing is completing the circuit in the run of the two lights.

FYI: remember to turn the power off firstLight switch won't control light fixture anymore?First, I'm assuming that you're in North America. If not, don't rely on this.

You don't say which of the two fixtures is currently controlled by the switch. I'm guessing it is the %26quot;old%26quot; fixture.

Most likely in the box behind your new light fixture there are 3 white wires and 3 black wires and 3 bare wires. The fixture also has a white, a black and a bare or green ground wire.

    These are:

1 black %26quot;hot%26quot; wire coming from the power panel

1 white neutral wire coming from the power panel

1 black and 1 white wire coming from the other light fixture

1 black and 1 white wire coming from the switch

1 bare wire coming from each of the above

The trick is to determine which white/black pair are coming from the switch. Be sure the Breaker serving your room is turned OFF at the power panel.

Pull the wires out of the box but do not disconnect any yet. There will be two or more white wires joined. There will be two or more black wires joined. There will almost certainly be a black and a white wire joined. The white wire of this pair is likely the white coming from the switch. Connect the black wire of your new fixture to this black/white pair. Connect the white wire of your new fixture to the all white/white group. If there is a green or bare wire on your new fixture, connect it to a ground screw on the metal box in the ceiling.

Turn the breaker back on and all should check out. Turn the power off again while you stuff the wires back in the box and screw your fixture back into place.

Good luck. Light switch won't control light fixture anymore?reread you question, it's confusing. you should call the ceiling light #1, and the other one #2. then explain which one you worked on, and which one is staying on. the mix up is probably where you connected the wires when you replaced the light, but determining which wire it is will be the problem.

if i had to guess what you did, (it's the ceiling light that is staying on), i'd guess that you mixed up the hot lead with the runners to the switch. it may be that the power was run to the ceiling light box, then split to the lights, and a wire was run to the wall switch to control them. in this case the runners to the switch, one white wire and one black, would both be hot. if you assumed that the white wire was neutral, and connected it to the other white wires, that might have caused what is now happening.

what you need to do now is determine which wires go where, and what they do. you'll need to open the ceiling light box, the switch box, and either the outlet or light box for the other light and then determine where the power enters the lighting system for the room, and which pairs of wires go where. the first thing that you would do is determine the power source and then tape off the hot lead before you start testing the other pairs of wires.

i would start by turning off the power at the fuse or circuit panel and then opening the wall switch, remove the switch from the box, and see how many wires are in that box.

    1) if the wall switch has just one black and one white wire in it, both hooked up to the switch, then the power does not enter the light system there. this means that this white wire is a hot lead (runner) at it's other end. some electricians will cover the wire with black electrical tape at both ends to signify this, but many don't.

    2) if on the other hand, you find that there are two sets of wires in the box, the whites and the grounds connected, and the black wires connected to the switch, then this would probably be where the power enters the light system to the room.

now, if you found the first wiring i described, you will need to open the ceiling light fixture and determine which pair of wires are the ones that run to the light switch box. identify them both as hot leads, (i'd cover the white lead with black tape), connect one of them to the power source (a single black wire), and the other to the supply (all the other black wires to the light(s) and or outlet for the other fixture). all of the white wires and all of the ground wires would be connected to themselves, whites to whites, and grounds to grounds.

of course to determine the hot (supply) wire you would have to identify the wires to the other fixtures, through the proccess of elimination, the one that does not go to the fixtures would be the supply. the ony other way to determine it would be to separate all of the black wires from each other, make sure they aren't touching anything or each other, then turn the power back on, and working with live electricity and a test light, determine which wire is the hot wire. i wouldn't reccomend doing this unless you are familiar with working with live wiring and comfortable doing so.

at this point, you may just want to turn off the power to the room, and call an electrician, if all this sounds too confusing. and i might not have even described the way your house was wired, it could have been done another way altogether.

good luck, if in doubt, call in an electrician.

How do you change an electrical outlet that is controlled by a light switch?

I have one of those electrical outlets that is controlled by a light switch, and currently (no pun intended) both the top and bottom sockets are controlled by that light switch. Is there a relatively easy way to change it so that only one of the sockets is controlled by the light switch?

I changed all the outlets in the room recently (I just painted the room, and the color of the old outlets didn't match) and I did notice that the outlet controlled by the light switch had more wires than the other outlets, so I'm guessing there's some configuration that will allow me to do what I want to do.

Are there any websites that will show a wiring diagram? That would be ideal.

Thanks! How do you change an electrical outlet that is controlled by a light switch? Here is a site that has diagrams that I have used in the past...

    http://www.electrical-online.com/wiringd

You can %26quot;un-switch%26quot; one of the outlets, but you'll need %26quot;un-switched%26quot; power... if there is a line that continues on to another outlet that provides for the %26quot;un-switched%26quot; power you can accompish what you want pretty easily, otherwise is would take running a wire.

Good luck! How do you change an electrical outlet that is controlled by a light switch?Turn the power off to the circuit. remove the outlet that is to the switch and one side with the black wires, there is a small brass jumper between the top and the bottom section of the outlet. This can be broken off with a small pair of pliers. The hot wire should be on one half, the switch wire on the other half. That should take care of what you are trying to do. If you are unsure about it or not willing to do it, call a qualified professional electrician to do the work. It is quite a common project. Good luck. How do you change an electrical outlet that is controlled by a light switch?b_oregon is absolutely correct. If you have both switched and unswithched power in the receptacle box is it very easy, just follow the drawing. If not it can get a bit hairy because you will need to run a wire. Follow the drawings or have someone you trust do it. A licensed electrician is a bit of overkill in either case. Like getting Dr. House to diagnose a cold or a splinter. I am nothing but a handyman and would do something like that for around $40 - $50 in my area. Providing no additional wiring is necessary. I live in an older neighborhood. Many house don't have ceiling lights only switched receptacles. Someone seems to want one or two changed ever few days. How do you change an electrical outlet that is controlled by a light switch?Shut off power at the breaker. Remove hot wire tab that ties 2 outlets together. You will have to run another hot wire that bypasses the switch. Depending on who wired the thing, that hot wire may be located at the switch or the wiring could have been done at the receptacle box.

At any rate you need that unswitched hot wire to go to one of the outlets. The wire from the switch goes to the other receptacle. These are usaully black but you never knwo what idots do when they mess with wiring. Electrons do not know the color of the insulation on the wire so don't always trust the %26quot;black and white%26quot; of wiring techniques.

Make sure your neutral are hooked up properly and according to local codes as well.

I need to change my bathroom light switch from a wall mounted one to a ceiling pull switch type. I have a live, neutral, and earth wire going to the existing switch. What do I do?How do I wire a bathroom light switch (pull cord)?if you have a black, white and copper in the switch then the switch is poweredin the light so you can unhook the wire going to the switch and not use it. it will be dead when you unhook it from where the light is. then hook what wires are left up to the supply terminals and then you can use your pull chain. hope this was helpfulHow do I wire a bathroom light switch (pull cord)? That may be against code if it's reachable from the tub. With a metal chain, I'd advise against it.

On any switch, it's the hot wire that is switched and never the neutral. The reason being is that if the neutral is switched, the light can be off yet a live wire is still there and if you somehow ground yourself while touching a live wire electrocution can result.

  • How to change a double light switch to a single?

    Hi all

I'm feeling DIY today and I've been trying to convert a double light switch to a single. Here's the situation:

In my living/dining room there are two light switches. A double one for living-room lights and dining-room lights. And a single one for dining-room lights. The single one doesn't work and this annoys me because I want to put a dimmer switch there.

Looking at the connections, I realised that the reason why the single switch doesn't work is that both switches for the dining room are set to 1 way (one cable in C one in L1).

My solution was to change the double switch to a single to operate only the living-room lights. I used terminators (the 5A ones) on the cables for the dining-room. I thought that by blocking the connection from the double switch, the single would work. No luck there :(

Any ideas what else I should try? The problem is that each socket has two brown wires (connected to C and L1) then two blue wires bundled together into a terminator, and two green/yellow wires bundled in a terminator.

I really want that dimmer switch (foot stamping) and I would appreciate your advice. BTW, I'm not an electrician (apparently) so if you could give me simplified instructions I'd be grateful :)

    Many thanks!

PS: I can't fit a double dimmer switch. There are 15 spot lights in the living-room (525 Watts total) and a dimmer switch for that costs a fortune!!!How to change a double light switch to a single?no offence but as some of your terminology and explanation is hard to understand and you are way way out of your depth your best course of action would be to send for a qualified electrician before you burn your house down one does not on a whim become an electricianHow to change a double light switch to a single?if in doubt then get a professionalHow to change a double light switch to a single?Your lights ( dining room ) are clearly not wired to operate %26quot; 2-way%26quot; The cable required to operate the lights in this manner are 3 core and earth ( one yellow, one red, one blue and a bare earth ) .I think your describing a %26quot; looped - neutral %26quot; in the switch ( the blue wires bundled together ) but to be honest without having a look i cannot ascertain what is going wrong here .call out a Spark .. your risking your health and home by tampering with something you don't fully understand .Good luck !

I want to know how do you change a park light switch in a 1992 chevy truck?

You have to take the bezel around the instrument cluster out, by removing the 4 Torx head screws. Then there are a couple screws that hold the switch in place. Remove those, unhook the wiring from the back of the switch and you are ready to test the old or replace with new. Pretty common for that switch to go out.I want to know how do you change a park light switch in a 1992 chevy truck?which type of truck s-10, full size?

    Changing switch/light configuration?

I have two lights that originally were controlled by a single switch. Since one of the lights is at the top of the staircase, I hired an electrician to add a second three-way switch. So now I have two three-way switches controlling the two lights.

Here is what I would like to accomplish: retain the three-way switch functionality for the stairway light, and put the other light on a separate switch (at the same location--I'd like a two-gang switch box with one three-way and the other single switch).

Obviously I should have had the electrician handle this, but I didn't think of it until later. I'm not certain how the wires are currently run, whether the power goes to the switch first or to the lights.

So I guess what I need to know is how to approach this--how to figure out the current wiring scheme, and what needs to be done in terms of re-wiring to get this to work the way I would like.Changing switch/light configuration? There are too many ways to wire a 3 way to even give you advice on this. Bite the bullet and hire an electrician. It's safer, and it shouldn't be too costly since it's a small job. If you know any electricians, they may be willing to do it on the side which will save you a bit. Hope this helps.

How hard is it to change out a head light switch in a'89 Ford truck.?

The problem started out with not having tail lights and interior dash lights. The head lights were still working. The brake lights still work. I would appreciate them! How hard is it to change out a head light switch in a'89 Ford truck.?Those don't have the release buttons on the back of the switch. I replaced the switch on the Mustang and the wiring harness on the Aerostar. I'm not a mechanic and I don't know much about cars, but I looked over the situation and did both jobs myself. The wiring harness would have been a very expensive job had it not been for my being able to find one at a junkyard. Good luck and I'll NEVER buy another Ford. How hard is it to change out a head light switch in a'89 Ford truck.?Its Pretty easy... you need to get to where you can place your hand behind the dash where the switch is located on the switch there is a spring loaded button...

depressing it while gently pushing back and forth slighlty on the knob (sometimes rotating the knob like you're turnin op or down the lights also will disengage it try both one will work)

you pull to turn the lights on should cause this knob with the actuator rod attached to pull loose from the switch...

next at the location the rod came out of there is a collar (usually Chromed) with 3 -4 notches in it this must be rotated counter clock wise about 6 turns or so until the switch comes free from the dash..

now unplug old switch from harness and plug in the new one... Place new switch upto the hole start the collar (retainer) by rotating it clockwise this time...

be sure to align up the locator notch in dash with the locator tab on switch now tighten collar until tight....

take actuator rod and place into the hole and push straight forward till you feel it start to bottom then push just a little more ...

you should feel and hear a slight click as the retainer sets on the grooved area at the tip of the rod...

try pulling the knob out to see if lights work... Lights work!!

Congratulations you just changed your first headlight switch and saved yourself at least $12-15 to pay a mechanic...

  • Changing a household lever action light switch..de-energize electrical circuit that controls switch?

I will be changing a light switch later today. It is my first time doing this as this is my first home.....

The directions on %26quot;how stuff works%26quot;.com says step 1 is to de-energize the electrical circuit that controls switch.....what do they mean by this???Changing a household lever action light switch..de-energize electrical circuit that controls switch? What they mean is turn off the power to the switch - the breaker box. Would be a rea; good idea for you to purchase a circuit tester to make sure you have the current off before going to work. You could do like I do - turn off all the power to the whole house and work with a spot light - I don't like electricity either.Changing a household lever action light switch..de-energize electrical circuit that controls switch?3DDD is right, but when I do stuff I just pull the breaker that the fixture is on. You may have fuses. Just find the fuse and remove it.Changing a household lever action light switch..de-energize electrical circuit that controls switch?Since you have never done this before it is best you turn off the main circuit breaker killing power to all the house.

The main is located in the breaker box. It is the big one at the top of the box.

After you get it turned off go around checking to make sure it has turned off all the circuits in the house before you start working. You do this by going and checking the circuits (lights, coffee makers, TV's, lamps etc.) by turning them off and on. Also turn the switch you are going to be changing off and on to make sure the power is off.

Reasons for the safety check: Three reasons:

    1. you have never done this before

    2. Circuit breakers and switches have been known to malfunction. You think you have them off but the circuit is still hot. That definitely makes for a nasty surprise.

    3. When working with electricity do not assume anything.

    You assume you a.s.s/u/me

It can be a little tricky but the wire should come out.How can I change out a light switch?Your question suggests you have some comfort level in dealing with electrical household current.

Buy the replacements -- if you decide to use the regular thinner switch, then, apart from the switch(s) you need to purchase the plate(s) -- the switch cover(s).

Now all you need is a flat-blade screwdriver (regular screwdriver).

Turn on the light using the switch in question.

Turn off the circuit breaker to this switch -- once done, the light should be off.

Unscrew the two screws on the plate (outlet cover).

Unscrew the two screws securing the switch to the switch box.

Wiggle the switch out of the box.

Once out, unscrew each screw securing the wires to the switch -- sufficient to remove wire from switch. Generally, the screws do not have to be taken off the switch -- in fact, there will be some tension once backed out a bit. You may have to play with the wire a bit to take out as they are wrapped around the screws usually in such a manner that the cut part of the wire is on the clockwise position -- you may have to spread this loop a bit to allow easy removal. Take a look at how the wires are positioned. The above noted is %26quot;best practice%26quot; but you'll find some attachments not following this rule.

Attach new switch in reverse order.

Make sure, if the switch notes on/off, that Off is on top.

This may seem counterintuitive but when the switch is off (lower position) that is the text that will be revealed.

Again, wires should go around switch, looped clockwise -- screw down to secure.

Push down switch into box, you will have some resistance as they are thick wires.

Screw switch onto box -- using the screws already on the new switch. The switch should be screwed down to meet the box, or line up to the wall. (varies with box positioning).

Onto switch, screw on switch cover (plate).

If the plate isn't flat with the wall, then you need to remove it again, and screw down the switch just a bit more.

Again, screw the plate onto the switch.

    Turn on the circuit breaker.

If lights are on -- and they should be -- Success !!

One last note: The wires on the switch are considered a HOT wire - they should both be black (on a Switch only) -- sometimes the original electrictian cuts corners and doesn't properly darken, or tape (with black tape) the white wire on a romex cable. Just make sure you use only those wires that were perviously attached to the switch orignially.

Future switch changing will be a breeze. How can I change out a light switch? You've got some pretty good advice so far. One thing that hasn't been mentioned. Are any of these switches three way or even 4 way? When two switches control one light that's three way and there will be three wires plus ground on each switch rather than two. On the old switch two screws will be one color and one another. Ditto the new switch. Copy what you see with respect to screw color - NOT position, sometimes the traveler wires (the two that are the same color) are on the same side of the switch, other times they're on the same end of the switch. How can I change out a light switch?TC has it right and simpleHow can I change out a light switch?Turn off the breaker. Please consult an electrician and do not risk personal injury. How to change out a light switch in the home? Are you refering to a 3-way circuit involving two switches, or a 4-way circuit involving 3 switches? Granted, the latter isn't as common, but it does exist.

First, you'll need to detemine what type of light you're attempting to dim. If it is a fluorescent light, forget it, they don't dim, not unless you have a special ballast, and I don't recall any homes ever having those types of lights. If it is an incandescent light, then you'll be able to dim it, however you'll need a special dimmer depending upon the type of circuit mentioned earlier in this response.

If you haven't done any electrical work before and aren't aware of the safety precautions involved, then I would STRONGLY suggest that you hire an electrician to perform the work for you.How to change out a light switch in the home?3 way switch or 3 lights on one switch? people ya gotta explain yourself here! either way you cant use a dimmer.. unless you used incandescent lighting

How do i change the light switch to a newer one that is flat?

i want one of those flat switches that can be turned off and on by touching and not flipping the switch; is this an easy thing to do; do i need to turn off the elect at the circuit breaker

thank you for your help. How do i change the light switch to a newer one that is flat?If the old light switch was wired properly, the power need not be shut off. If the white wires are attached to the screws on the old switch you don't need the popwer off as they are the nuetral wires. Take the wire attached to the dark screw off the old switch and attach it to the dark wire on the new one. The same goes for the wire attached to the silver screw. Throw away the old switch and ra attach the new switch to the box. Install the new cover and you're ready for rock and roll...and light too.How do i change the light switch to a newer one that is flat?Fortunately hitting a target at 1000 yards is easy too if you have got practice. Electricity is extremely dangerous and replacing something as simple as a switch is never-the-less a very critical process.

Just to give you an idea why, would you believe all of the above answers are incorrect ? That is right. Turning off the breaker does NOT insure the circuit will be dead. Any trained electrician will know there as such things as double fed and shared neutrals which can leave a nasty little surprise.

You job involves turning off the main.. that is killing the entire house. Remove the switch and reconnect everything up as was to the new switch. That is the only safe way to do this.

Note: Aluminium wire requires the proper aluminium devices. How do i change the light switch to a newer one that is flat? There's a reason that %26quot;old timers%26quot; aren't around to answer these questions.... don't EVER touch a wire to see if it is live! Also, don't touch the black and white wires together to see if a circuit is live.

Just follow John's instructions and you'll be fine. How do i change the light switch to a newer one that is flat?My dad told me that the old timers used to touch the end of the wires to see what was hot. If it were me though, I'd still make the long trip to the breaker box to shut off the juice.

The project is easy enough, switches in general are all basically the same. Take out the old and replace with the new.How do i change the light switch to a newer one that is flat?Yes. Turn off the circuit breaker for that switch. Kris is a little over the top. Shared neutrals and such don't make a bit of difference because you are not going to fool with the neutral. Ok, now we have that sorted out. Turn on the light, turn off the circuit breaker that makes the light go out.

Pull the switch out. Look at how many wires connect to the sides of the switch. Not counting the ground. 2 or 3 or 4, depending if it is a simple single pole, a three way, or a 4 way. Buy a switch with a matching configuration. Install that new switch the same way as the one you take out. Make sure your connections are tight using the screws or clamp type connections tightened with screws. Don't use the slip in wire connections on the back. They are failure prone. How do i change the light switch to a newer one that is flat?very easy job to do. First you will need to find the circuit to the switch. Once you have the electric turned off, take the old switch out of the wall. Get masking tape and wrap around each wire so you can label them so they go back exactly how you took them off. The new switch should have the same screws to put the wires back on. Then take the wires off the old switch and put onto the new switch. screw the new switch back into the box, and screw the plate back on. then turn on the electricity and hopefully everything works well. only tool you should need is a flat head screw driver, but it might be nice to have a wire detector to make sure power is turned off.How do i change the light switch to a newer one that is flat?Very easy project. Is the switch you are replacing a part of a 2 or more switches that control the same light or outlet. If not you are in luck. Just turn of the breaker that handles this switch and replace it. The instructions in the new switch pkg will walk you through it. If it is a part of something bigger you will need to explain that in the store and they will sell you same switch that will be able to work with other switches on same circuit. You still can do it, it is not hard just an extra wire.

Good Luck! How do i change the light switch to a newer one that is flat?Yes...you need to turn the power off at breaker switch. You will need both the new flat switch and switch cover. Take off the old cover once power is off....remove the old switch and disconnect the 2 wires. On switches you can attach the 2 wires to either pole or connection. Screw the new switch back in with the ON position at top. Once it's secure...put the new cover on.....and then go turn on power at breaker box.

It is a reasonable charge I'm afraid, but as you've already been told its cheaper to do it yourself. A lot of people are afraid to touch electrics, but its simpler than you may think. For the jobs that you're talking about its just a question of turning off the electric, and swapping the wires over into the new sockets/switches. The new items you buy even tell you of any colour changes in the wiring over the years.

DavidHow much should it be for an electrician to change a light switch and plug sockets?oh hun, next time ask the question on how to do this... it is so easy! Trust me. The hardest part is finding what fuse to pull if they are not labeled on your panel. I let my 5 year old daughter change the double switch in the bathroom when I redid it a few months back. I know if she could do it you can! Still, overall, I don't think the price was that bad for an electrician. How to change a light switch?

I want to know how to change my regular light switch to something like an electronic dimmer. I need to know how to do the wiring. How to change a light switch?A switch is a pretty simple device, One wire connected to it has the power from the panel. The other wire goes to the light. The nice thing is that for most switches, it does not matter which one is connected to which screw. Make sure you turn off the power at the panel, remove the switch from the box, (as long as only two wires are connected), remove then, and connect them to the new switch and re-install.

The new digital dimmers that I have seen come with wires attached to them. In this case, you will need two wire nuts to make the connection. One wire for the switch connected to one wire from the box. They may also have a green wire on the switch, this is a ground. Attach it to the metal box in the wall with a ground screw or wire nut it to a bare ground wire in the box.

If this is a 3 way switch, or more than two wires are currently attached, you should probably get the help of a professional. How to change a light switch? No problem, good luck!

How to change a light switch?the important thing to remember always turn the power off when doing dimmers

all the advice above is very good so it would seem that your switch just might be changed before i finish typing thisHow to change a light switch?Several types of dimmer switches are available--for example, push-on dimmers ( figure A) and slide dimmers (figure B)--but most operate the same way.

    Materials:

    Dimmer switch

    Medium-size flat-head screwdriver

    Needle-nose pliers

    Crimping tool

    Circuit tester

    Barrel crimps

    Wire nuts

Safety tip: Periodically test your circuit tester at an operating electrical outlet.

Turn off the power at the circuit breaker.

    Remove the switchplate cover.

Remove the screws from the existing switch, and pull it out from the wall.

Use the circuit tester to make sure the power is off.

    Disconnect the wiring.

Straighten the wires coming from the wall.

Twist a wire from the switch onto a wire from the wall, and snug the connection with needle-nose pliers. Use a barrel crimp (figure C) to connect the green wire to the bare copper ground wire. (Some building codes require that ground wires be connected with barrel crimps.)

Note: For this installation, it doesn't matter which color wires you use to make your connections.

Cap the connection tightly with a wire nut.

Repeat the process for the other two wires.

Push the wires back into the box, screw the switch into place, and replace the cover. Be sure to install sliding dimmer switches upright--otherwise they could operate in reverse. The previous cover plate may not fit; others are available.

Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.
