How to test a light fixture's wires with a multimeter?

Hi, I've changed electrical outlets and light switches in the past, but this is my first time changing a light fixture, so I need to know how to use a multimeter on the wires connected to the old fixture to check for wires. I found the switch to turn off the power to the light, as when I flip the switch, the power to that light is off even if the switch is on. But I want to make sure it's off using a multimeter. What setting would I have to put the multimeter on, which holes should I connect the black and red leads into on the multimeter, and which parts of the wires should I touch using the metal part of the leads? Will touching the insulation work? Or will I have to take off the wire nuts and make the multimeter touch the part of the wires without any insulation? This is just a regular multimeter, not a neon one or light up one, it has a digital display to show the exact voltage. How to test a light fixture's wires with a multimeter?Set your meter on AC 600 volts. Where the light bulb screws in put one meter lead on the side inside the socket and the other lead on the little metal strip at the bottom of the screw in base. With the switch on you should read 120 volts.

To check the bulb with the meter put the setting on continuity beeper and touch the two leads together. You should hear a beep then touch one lead to the side of the bulb where it screws into the socket and touch the other lead on the little metal tip at the end of the bulb. If it beeps the bulb is good and if not it is bad.How to test a light fixture's wires with a multimeter? The 200 volt AC range should be sufficient in the US. If you are in the UK, any AC voltage setting above 250 will work. Place one lead on the outside edge of the socket and the other on the tab in the center. With the power off, you should read ZERO. With the power on, you should read about 110 - 120 in the US or 220 - 240 in the UK. Anything more than 10 volts off indicates something is wrong.

How to change lights on a 2005 chrysler town and country a/c panel?

the words and the switches are not readable at nightHow to change lights on a 2005 chrysler town and country a/c panel? On some, if you take the control out of the vvehicle, it will have replaceable bulbs. Some, you have to disassemble the control to get to the bulbs.

On many, Chrysler does not indicate a replacement bulb number for the bulb itself. They will tell you that you need to replace the control itself. If the bulbs are soldered in, you will have to replace the entire control unit.

The display itself may not have a replaceable bulb, so it might require replacing the entire unit.

If you've got your dash lights dimmed down, it will also dim the A/C control. Not trying to be insulting, just pointing it out just in case, after all, sometimes the obvious things escape us.How to change lights on a 2005 chrysler town and country a/c panel?idk

  • How do I fix a light fixture?

Learning a lot about electrical. I'm able to change sockets and switches, and changed the light fixtures in my kitchen. I use proper tools. But I tried to change the one in the living room, a semi-flush mount with three light sockets. First when I turned on the dimmer switch it only went from off to bright and there was a loud buzzing. So I redid the wiring and this time it worked but there was still a very tiny buzzing from one socket. So me and my brilliant self tried to tighten the tiny screw inside the socket, without turning off the source, duhh, I knew this. I did not fly off the ladder but the screwdriver of course flew out of my hand leaving the tip black and the light unit blown I think. They flicker weakly. How do I fix a light fixture?Wow! that sounds fun can I come over? turn off the power then recheck at the connect up in the light wires for good connect you may need another dimmer switch this stuff wont take big spikes of voltage so be careful. HA! im an electrical junkie funny story wouldn't recommend this but on an old 110 volt system porch light socket on a bet I wet my finger and put it from ground the out side threaded part to the inside center tab positive part for a wail I felt the current for a wail but it wasn't that bad once i gained confidence for me it was easy to take but i had on shoes and my feet went wet makes big difference good luck if you need more help than that try a couple shots of vodka then try again repeat as necessary lol!!! have funHow do I fix a light fixture?I have done that many times.by not taking the time to go and shut off the power again.Never wear a ring when working with electricity.Go to www.howstuffworks.com That may have the answers for you.How do I fix a light fixture?Hopefully - you've only shorted out a wire. Turn the light OFF (at the breaker box), and take it down immediately, to inspect the wiring. (You may have a smoldering wire inside where you can't see it - you need to check)

If this is an important light fixture, you may be able to repair the damage, with a little effort. If its not an expensive piece, or has no sentimental value, you may just want to replace it.

Getting careless or in a hurry, and taking short cuts can kill, when working with electricity. You were lucky this time, hehe.

The outputs are usually close together. If it's like that, remove the wire from the output terminal that it is in and put it in the other one.How do I change the on/off positions of a single switch on a lightswitch?First your going to want to shut off the power if you don't know what breaker the room is, flip the main breaker off. Make sure you do this during the day so you have light to work. Once the power is off remove the cover screws (one on top and bottom of ever switch) With the cover removed unscrew the switch in question (again 2 screws per switch) and turn it 180 degrees then screw the switch back in, replace the cover, and turn the breaker on. Changing a Light Fixture.?

I have learned how to install a new light fixture and it is pretty straightforward, even though I have a 40 year old home.

However in the hallway there is a light that is hookedup to a switch at either end of the hall. Before I attempt to change it, will the wiring be any different. I want to make sure that the light switches work at both end of the hall.

Thank you for any help you can tell me. I am a 66 year old woman who is on a really fixed budget and it is imperative I save as much money as possible by doing as much work as I can around this house. So am very appreciative of any help you can give me.Changing a Light Fixture.?First make sure that before you open the fixture that you'll have enough light to see the wires when the power goes off. (You Must turn the panel breaker off to do this job safely)

Second as you remove the old fixture you should see two wires wire-nutted to the lamp. also there may be a wire nut (extra) going somewhere else in the box.

Third: un-do only the wire nuts that are connected to the lamp- It is a good idea to draw a picture of the wires if there are more than 2 plastic coated + 1 copper..If you see more than the 2 plastic and 1 shiney copper; the other wires are for the switches.

Just make sure that any wires connected other than your two wires going to the lamp, stay the same way. (I'm talking about the plastic coated wires). If there is no shiney copper wire in the box Call an electrician, because the copper wire on your lamp needs to be connected to the shiney copper wire. That is for ground!! A very important safety feature!!!Changing a Light Fixture.?It's the same thing, I think. Just make sure you match color for colorChanging a Light Fixture.?You may find a few extra wires in the box at the ceiling, but you should only worry about the two that your existing light fixture are attached to. The job is the same, remove the two wires from the old fixture, attach the new wires from the new one and put it back together. Safer if you turn off the circuit breaker for the light circuit of course.Changing a Light Fixture.?Unless you need to change the switches also, it should be fairly simple.

When you remove the fixture, take note of how it is wired and rewire it accordingly.

Since there are several ways to wire a double- pole fixture, and because there can be a white wire that is used as a 'hot' in this situation, it's probably best to wire exactly as is is now.

Oh yeah, do not forget to turn the power off at the panel before you start working on it.

Good LuckChanging a Light Fixture.?The wiring will be the same, just make sure you turn off the power.Don't mess with any other wires in the box, just the ones to the fixture.Neutral white and hot will be black or red.Changing a Light Fixture.?Just pay attention as you diconnect the old one. reconnect the new one in the same fashion. You wont have any problems.Changing a Light Fixture.?in a house that old color coded wire probably are not there as far as the coating ,look at the wire color itself. ask a neighbor for help I usually go help my neighbors any chance I getChanging a Light Fixture.?Like everyone said you should only used the wires that connect directly to the old fixture. In the case you mixed up the wires. The switches are different than regular ones, they're called 3way switches. they have 3 connections, 2 are called travelers, and the black connection is called common. the 2 travelers are connected to eachother, that means the wires go from one switch straight to the other switch. the common from one switch go the light, and the other common from the other switch go to the source of power. the neutral wire doesn't go to the switches at all.

How do you replace a neutral safty switch for a 1989 Jeep Cherokee 4.0?

Sometimes my Jeep want start and the automatic stick shift will not move. Someone told me that it was the neutral safty switch that was faulty. They also told me that i must change the back up light switch as well. Please advise. Thanks to all of you that gave me good advice thus far. It is very helpful. How do you replace a neutral safty switch for a 1989 Jeep Cherokee 4.0?If the stick won't move, it's not the NSS. The interlock cable from the GM steering column to the shifter is out of sync, or the button is not pushing the detent out of the gated shift linkage at the base of the shifter. The NSS is an electrical switch in the passenger side of the transmission that just moves when it's told to.

It's an adventure to get to them, diagnose, and fix. You will definitely need the help of someone 1) experienced 2) who knows about that era of Jeep Cherokees. Obviously not who recommended the repairs you mentioned.

  • Replacing an existing light switch?

I have a light switch that has 2 switches and a outlet included. it has 5 wires going to it. (2 to the top switch controls a light, 2 to the second switch which controls an outlet, and one to the outlet inthe switch. How do i connect to the wires to change to 2 switch device?Replacing an existing light switch?Best not to mess with it.

You have no assurance that the two switches are connected

    to the same circuit.

(The two wires to each switch are 'power in' and 'switched leg out to light%26quot;.)

The wire to the outlet on the switch is probably a neutral.

Is it white?Replacing an existing light switch?I would just leave it like it is. It gets very complicated if you are not an electrician and I love mine and wish I had more outlets next to switches.

You could put wire nuts on the wires going to the outlet but make sure that it's not on a run to another outlet.

How do I hook up a three way switch?

I have electric to both switches but the light won't turn on. I have changed the light bulb several times and that didn't help. I have also changed the receptacle and that didn't help. How do I hook up a three way switch?Installing 3-way Switches

    From Apply Now,

    Your Guide to Home Repair.

You can turn the lights on here and off over there, and you can do it yourself once you know the trick. It's not exactly simple, but it's far less complicated than most people assume.

There are two important things to remember to make 3-way switches work right. One is that the switches are really single-pole, double-throw devices. That means that one of the three terminals on each switch is always connected to one of the other two. The terminal that is always connected is called the point terminal. It should be specially identified. Most commonly, the screw for the point terminal will be dark and the other two screws will be bright. Toggling - flipping - a 3-way switch changes which of the other two terminals the point terminal is connected to.

To help visualize this, you can think of a 3-way switch as a %26quot;V.%26quot; The bottom of the V is the point terminal and the top of the letter is where the other two terminals are.

Each time the switch is flipped, the wire terminated on the point is disconnected from one of the other two terminal screws and connected to the other.

The other important thing to remember is that 3-way switches come in pairs. It takes two of them, and only two, to make the system work. In addition, three-way switching works because the two non-point terminals on one of the 3-way switches are always connected directly to the two non-point terminals on the other 3-way switch with a pair of wires called the travelers. A three-conductor cable - with or without a ground wire - connects the two switches and carries the two travelers. The third insulated conductor in the three-conductor cable is used as a hot wire or as a neutral, depending on which is needed.

In every 3-way switch system, the ungrounded conductor from the panel - the %26quot;hot%26quot; wire - is connected to the point terminal on one of the two switches. The switch-controlled %26quot;hot%26quot; wire, which connects the switch system to the first controlled light, is connected to the point terminal on the other switch. The grounded conductor - the neutral wire - is not switched. It is carried to the first light and connected there.

There are three scenarios that cover more than 90% of all three-way switch installations. One of these should work for you in a new installation. If you're troubleshooting existing wiring, one of these will most likely be what you are looking at.

Remember to turn the power OFF at the panel before starting. For a new installation, remember to use #12 AWG (American Wire Gauge) wire on a 20 amp circuit. You can use #14 AWG wire on a circuit protected at 15 amps. How do I hook up a three way switch?did you turn the power back on? use a tester to read voltage to the light %26amp; switch. the bulb could be just fine. start from the breaker box and find out where the power is first. look up the wiring diagram online ther'll be illistrations you can refrence and it's be a lot easier than trying to figure out what the heck we're saying. How do I hook up a three way switch?dont no at all. u can ask the retart on top of me hes a nerdHow do I hook up a three way switch?Make sure that there is electricity going to the light. How do you install a brake light switchon a 94 astro van?

I have a 94 astro van that the brake lights all of a sudden stop working one night. I replaced the bulbs thinking one burned out. The switch is mounted high %26amp; deep, under the dash, behind the brake-pedal arm...so you'll remove %26amp; replace by lying on your back, and scooted up til your face is up under the dash to reach...it's rather uncomfortable, to put it kindly.

The switch is fairly easy to see once you're in there; it's a plunger-type about 2%26quot; square just after the bend in the arm.How do you install a brake light switchon a 94 astro van?there is two outher things it could be a blowen fuse or a bad relay the switch is more likey monted near the brake peddle and screwed in to a breaketHow do you install a brake light switchon a 94 astro van?before you do any of those things, my question to you is, do you have tilt steering in your van? if yes, then look along the steering column under the dash from top to bottom, at one point you will see an electrical harness plugged into a connector attached to the column, its more towards the bottom of the column. check that connector. the 94 vans were known for pulling the connectors just ever so slightly when the tilt was used, gm screwed up and didn't keep enough length on the wires. when the wires were pulled they would just disconnect just enough not to make contact, boom, no brake lights. what i do is i just plug them back into place making sure they snap in, and then zip tie them. problem solved. good luck.

I want to change an electrical outlet to a switch which will control a light. How?

If you think you can, knock the breaker that controls the outlet and the one to the light. Run a 12-2 wire from the outlet to the light (the outlet is or should be a 20 amp circuit, so you need 12-2 wire). In the outlet box connect the original white wire and the new one going to the light together, and connect the two ground wires (they will be plain copper). Connect the original black wire to the bottom of your new switch, and the black from the new wire going to the light to the top of the switch. At the light connect the white to white, and the black to black to black. Be sure to keep the ground wires connected together and to any metal that close to them in the outlets (should be a green colored screw in the box for the ground wire). Be sure to tape any bare connections that originally went to the lightI want to change an electrical outlet to a switch which will control a light. How?first that other answer........is wrong

most house wiring is 14 ga. wire and use 15 amp breakers

you cannot connect 2 circuits together, Either you'll get a big bang or a 220 volt line like your electric stove, in which case you'll still get the big bang

Kind of funny if you think about it. Is this light on the ceiling or what? They make a switch receptacle combination that fits in the place of a receptacle outlet. It switches whatever plugs into the outlet. Would that work? Not sure what you wish to do.

The other answers you got are downright silly, except for the advise to call an electrician.I want to change an electrical outlet to a switch which will control a light. How?electricianI want to change an electrical outlet to a switch which will control a light. How?You need to be more specific in what you wish to do.

Where is the light and is it going to be a new light box and fixture? Or is there an existing light you wish to control?

How high is the outlet and where is this work being done?

Well if you can get into the ceiling above it is easy just get the proper box for ceiling and run a 14-2 up to it. Pigtail the hot wire from the original outlet to the switch and connect the white wire from the 14-2 to the white. Then connect the black wire from the 14-2 to the switch.

    Pretty basic really.

Now if you cant get above, you will need an extention box and conduit up to a box. Where is the back up light switch on the 2004 dodge ram 1500?

My dad needs help with this...and I'm trying to help him, but I'm having a tough time. I do not know anything about cars, trucks, etc...but my dad does, so can you please answer the question like you are talking to my father, he'll will look at this. Well what he needs to know is where or how to change the back up light switch on his 2004 dodge ram 1500 truck? He think he knows where it is but he wants to double check, make sure, and if anybody has or can find pictures of it to show where it is, it would be a big help. You don't need to provide the pictures, but it would be handy, as long you can explain it well, it would be enough... Thank-you to anyone who answers... :-)Where is the back up light switch on the 2004 dodge ram 1500?The transmission range sensor, which controls the backup lamps, is located in the solenoid pack assembly. I am assuming that the vehicle is equipped with a 45RFE transmission. To replace the solenoid pack you must remove the transmission pan and valve body. The solenoid pack is bolted to the top of the valve body. If you have an issue with no reverse lights, I would look elsewhere as I have never seen and issue with the solenoid pack causing a problem with no backup lights.

If the vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission, the backup lamp switch is located on the passenger side of the transmission case is is screwed directly into the case. It should be a two wire connector. If you jump the two terminals in the connector the backup lamps should come on if the switch is your problem.

I hope this information helps, dont forget to check the fuse.Where is the back up light switch on the 2004 dodge ram 1500?first answer is great with one exception. the trs is in the solenoid pack, but the code plate it rides on stays on the valve body. early in the 45rfe's life there were problems with backup lamps not working, but that was 10 years ago now. you may need a scanner for this one.Where is the back up light switch on the 2004 dodge ram 1500?Used to be, it was part of the 3 prong neutral starter switch mounted of the outside of the trans. We should all %26quot;do our bit%26quot; to save the planet. But it's somewhat discouraging to be told to switch off lights, change bulbs, turn down thermostats etc. and then we see High Street shops with their doors wide open all winter whatever the weather. Many of these have expensive hot-air curtains running too! What's more, we pay for that wasted electricity in the price of goods.

Should we boycott those shops or at least keep mentioning it to their managers at each visit?

Am I alone thinking this? How about it people, let's start a campaign. Why do High Street shops waste so much heating energy?IT IS not just on heating that they waste money,

the way they have lights on at night like there is no tomorrow. Why do High Street shops waste so much heating energy? They waste so much energy because it is you not them that pays the bill.

Mentioning it will not have any positive outcome and you would have to boycott EVERY supermarket and that isn't a realistic expectation for the majority of the population. Why do High Street shops waste so much heating energy?Possibley even worse than that is open display fridges and freezers found in shops and supermarkets, what a waste! Why do High Street shops waste so much heating energy? They expend that energy for competitive purposes. Its an example of how %26quot;doing your bit%26quot; isn't going to help save the planet. And in the first place, the planet is not in danger to begin with, so lighten up and enjoy the fact that you have a 1500cc brain like most homo sapiens and know how to use modify natural resources to stay comfortable. Why do High Street shops waste so much heating energy?I work in a store where we purposely keep the door closed to save energy, and customers leave it open, which is annoying if not despairing to watch.

We are one of a few major brands that do keep our door closed. There is a little more on a blog post I wrote about this, with a link to a similar article in the Times last year.

    http://howtosaveenergy.blogspot.com/2007

Feel free to name and shame some on my blog.

Closing doors seemingly has no affect as shop assistants rush to open them to comply with policies, so they don't get fired or lose potentially big bonuses.

I also do mystery shops for a big UK mystery shop organisation Retail Eyes, and one of the questions on most questionnaires is, was the shop doors open?

I have seen in my own company that with a door shut it can lead to people walking away thinking we are closed, even after failing to open the open closed door if that makes sense. This is what companies fear, and the cost of lost sales far outweighs the cost of the overheads. This is the sad reality that these companies live in, and because their competitors doors are open, they leave theirs open.

The energy wasted in a store the size of the body shop (very small) is enough to power an average sized house. And its no suprise retailers electricity consumption per m2 is one of the highest from all industry.

I think we need to have a shut the door campaign, and send people out to shut doors up and down the country as they shop. The retailers will be too busy to open them again.

    Energy Saver

http://howtosaveenergy.blogspot.comWhy do High Street shops waste so much heating energy?Hear, hear!!!Why do High Street shops waste so much heating energy?Mostly I agree. But hot air curtains actually save money!!

You do not HAVE to shop so much. Why do High Street shops waste so much heating energy?agree with Allen B, Yes they waste so much with lighting and heating. I understand you and feel the same. Why do High Street shops waste so much heating energy?I used to be active in Friends of the Earth and we once ran a local campaign to do this. I don't know how successful it was but long term it clearly failed as today it is still happening in the city centre here. I think it's partly related to people overheating their houses and expecting shops to be as warm, partly related to people walking around half-naked in the middle of winter for some odd reason and partly because shops believe it makes their business feel more welcoming. In fact, even my local church does it. They themselves spend money on the heating as well.

There's probably some minimum legal level for temperatures in workplaces that's ridiculously high. However, i will think about talking to FoE again, as it's a good point. Why do High Street shops waste so much heating energy?some shops dont keep the door open but 2 many ligts on in the middle of summer wen the sun gives in most of the light whats he point of puttin all the lights onWhy do High Street shops waste so much heating energy? It has been said - hot air curtains save energy overall. Shutting the door of a shop is often impractical because of the number of people going in and out so the air curtain is used as a barrier to prevent excessive heat loss from a shop.

Shops do use way to much power it is true - if only people would spend as much when the lighting doesn't make products look as appealing and they are not as warm

The dealer tells me I have to change the turn signal/head light switch in the steering wheel, but they also say I have to change some control unit integrated circuits. They don't seem to be sure what the problem is, so before buying some expensive integrated circuits, I wanted to hear some suggestions on how to troubleshoot the problem and/or confirm the dealer diagnostics. What is wrong with my high beam toyota 4runner 2002 lights?First, I am making an assumption that your diesel is wired the same as a gas one, as here in the US we don't have the diesel. But the critical question is, %26quot;Does the truck have daytime running lights?%26quot; If no, the answer is simple: you need a headlight switch, which you canNOT disassemble to repair. It is one of the new modular ones that are all fastened together and can't be fixed. However, if you DO have DRLs, the answer is MUCH more complicated because all inputs from the headlight switch go to one DRL relay (computer) and all functions are controlled from there. No doubt the dealer hedged in their answer because they know that the most likely answer is the switch, but want to leave room to cover themselves if that doesn't fix it. Unfortunately, from studying the diagram, it would be really tricky to bypass the relay to test, and you would really have to know what you were doing. If it were in my shop, I would check for continuity across the switch in high beam ( pins 7 and 16, a violet wire and a white with black tracer wire). If none were there, I would put the switch in and hope for the best. I might would even see if I could find another vehicle and borrow the relay just to be safe, but I completely understand their hesitation. I tell you, until you try to diagnose these modern cars (which is what I do every day!) you just don't understand what we are up against. In this specific case, if you follow the diagnostic tree for inoperative high beams in the diagnostic section of the Toyota Information System, it gives you location of the components and NO help on diagnosis.

Maybe you could cut the guys a break......

Hope this helps. God Bless! What is wrong with my high beam toyota 4runner 2002 lights? Most likely it is the switch in the steering column. It is easy, less time consuming and more profitable for them to order a new switch, replace it and charge you for it. BUT it is possible all the switch needs is dismantling and the contacts cleaning and put back together.

It is also time consuming for them to diagnose electrical problems and hunt about the wring looms in inconvenient places looking for inoperative circuits, hence why they told you it may be the circuits, it may be the switch. Not very helpful at all. What is wrong with my high beam toyota 4runner 2002 lights?the high beam on the switch is out you will need a new switch

Can a broken brake light switch cause a new car battery to go completely dead overnight?

I've been having a problem with my car not starting. I checked the alternator. No problem. I changed to a new battery. Radio, clock, lights were all turned off. But the next day, the battery is completely dead again.

If the brake light switch is broken on %26quot;On%26quot; position, is it possible that this could drain all the power from the new battery? How do I find out if the brake light switch is a problem?

Finally, have you tried replacing just the bulbs? What is wrong with the high beam lights of my toyota 4runner 2002?the dealer is correctWhat is wrong with the high beam lights of my toyota 4runner 2002?It sounds as if the dip switch is at fault, that's the one you move backwards and forwards to change from main to dip.

It will not be a fuse or fuse box problem because the headlamp flash part of the switch works. On this model I am not sure where your side and headlamp switch is located. If it is part of the column switch then this will need replacing together with the dip switch. If it is separate on the dash panel then this should be OK to leave as it is working fine if the lights work on dip beam.

It sounds as if the dealer is hedging his bets. In other words he is not sure what the problem is so as to cover his back he tells you to replace everything. What is wrong with the high beam lights of my toyota 4runner 2002?I would think the turn signal switch is bad. • What does your school do to save energy?

We are trying to figure our how our school can become a greener school, we need to find ways to save energy.

    So far we got

changing to laptops instead of dino computer

Trying to change light bulbs (what kind though)

    Dim lights more

Switching most of our electronics to solar power

Closing doors to save the heat

Making posters to remind students and teachers to turn off lights in classrooms after they are done.

Any other ideas? What does your school do to save energy?recylce all 1, 2, %26amp; 3 numbered plastics ( check ur city recycle center 4 guidelines); recycle plastic, aluminum, and glass; have staff, students and surrounding neighbors use the school to recycle their unwanted junk mail, magazines, cafe milk cartons, old homework, and copy paper (after using both sides of course).

compost all cafeteria food to cut ur waste in half! get the students to pick fruits at lunch (instead of huny buns) to maximize ur composting..... in addition less processed foods cut down on ur carbon footprint.

eat local produce 2 cut down on ur carbon footprint that occurs during transport.

drink water from the fountain or delivered spring water (it's like buying in bulk to reduce on packaging)

use non toxic paint (expensive) for repairs and improvements---p.s. some colorants added in the non-toxic paint base is toxic so read carefully I found out the hard way!

purchase eco friendly office and school supplies like recycled paper, envelopes, and notebooks, and i've even seen eco-friendly glue.

and lastly, the most energy efficient lightbulbs are LED and they light up quickly (don't need to warm up) and last longer, but they are also quiet expensive and u may not b able to replace all ur bulbs with them. just remember with CFLs they contain small amounts of mercury so they must b recycled or that will get into our soil and drinking water. if the bulbs break clear out immediately, carefully clean the spill while wearing a face mask and gloves and double bag to dispose. if someone says it's not that deep jus let em know that's why they took mercury thermometers off the market. they were the most accurate, but the most toxic.

GOOD LUCK!!!What does your school do to save energy? My school fails, we're gonna die. What does your school do to save energy?go to the dark ages get off the grid use candle lightsWhat does your school do to save energy?Go a step further with the computers and a) make sure they are turned off at night b) they're screens are dimmed (defaults from factory are usually full brightness which is usually unnecessary) and that the screens turn off after a decent amount of unused time.

Your lights can all be fluorescent which, if you are in a normal modern school they all should be the tube ones already. other than that i think you have it all pretty much covered. i wish that my school would implement these policies, too.

How many Democrats does it take to “Change” a light bulb?

Scenario: A couple: the husband was just laid off from his job %26amp; the wife just found out she’s pregnant. They arrive home %26amp; switch the light on. Nothing happens. The husband states the bulb is probably blown %26amp; it just needs to be “CHANGED” So he “CHANGES%26quot; it. Simple he thinks. Still there is no light. He than states it’s probably just the lamp gone bad %26amp; he “CHANGES” the lamp. Still no light. In the meantime the wife stressed out over her husband losing his job; having no health insurance; wondering what else could go wrong starts sorting their mail %26amp; comes across the utility bill. She opens it %26amp; it’s an Overdue Notice stating that the service was being shut off. Moral of the story is that CHANGE can seem to be the best solution, but in reality what is actually occurring behind the scene is much more complicated %26amp; will take more than a simple “CHANGE” to correct it. Do you think many Democrats are being blinded by the light and/or need to take off their rose tinted glasses? How many Democrats does it take to “Change” a light bulb?Let's compare the record:

    From the Library of Congress:

Hillary Clinton in her one full term(6 yrs.) and another year campaigning, has authored and passed only 20 pieces of legislation in her term of six years into law. They range from naming a courthouse after Thurgood Marshall to naming a Post Office after Jonn A. O'Shea.

Obama in his first 8 Months sponsored over 820 Bills. Introduced 233 Bills on Healthcare Reform, 125 Bills on Poverty and Public Assistance, 112 Bills on Crime Fighting, 97 Economic Bills, 60 Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Bills, 21 Ethics Reform Bills, 6 Veterans Affairs Bills and many others. In his First Year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 Bills and co-spomsored another 427. These Include: 1) the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 that became Law, 2) the Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-prliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act that became Law, 3) the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act that passed the Senate, 4) the 2007 Government Ethics Bill that became Law, just to name a few. In all, since he entered the Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 Bills and co-sponsored another 1096.

Why is this not being discussed heavily on the blogs? Obama supporters should be copying and pasting this all over the net and inundating all the Hillary Blogs with this. When people take a hard look... she is not a hard worker. She represents more grid lock and laziness.

How hard is it to change headlight switch on a 77 corvette?

My 77 vette panel lights wont come on and the over head light wont come on either. I imagine its the headlight switch. Ive checked the fuses and the headlights still work. Any help? How hard is it to change headlight switch on a 77 corvette?I would imagine the switch knob can be pulled out by pushing a release button on top of the light switch controller. It's just behind the dash. You'll have to reach up and find it.

Once the handle AND SHAFT pull out, you can then remove the retaining knob from the front of the dash where the handle and shaft came out.

After you unscrew the retaining knob, the light switch unit should come right out. Carefully unplug the wire harness.

To install the new one, just repeat the steps in reverse. NOTE: You can push the knob and shaft back in without having to push the release button. The shaft will automatically lock in.How hard is it to change headlight switch on a 77 corvette?http://www.automotiveforums.com/f111-corvette.html

How do you switch outlets controlled by a light switch?

I want to change the outlet that is controlled by the light switch to another outlet. How do you switch outlets controlled by a light switch? This is a job for a pro.

An outlet with a hot switch (one side controlled by a light switch) has additional wiring going from the one side of the outlet to the switch box. If you wanted the switch to control a different outlet, you would need to have it re-wired.

A better (and cheaper) alternative is a wireless remote switch. It allows you to put a switch anywhere you like and control a device plugged into the receiver. People use them for lamps and such. This is something that most hardware stores have - they require no wiring - and they're easily set up.How do you switch outlets controlled by a light switch? It's possible - but not easy.

I recommend calling an electrician. How do you switch outlets controlled by a light switch?Have to get a switchleg to it. It is possible there is one there. Call a pro.How do you switch outlets controlled by a light switch? That involves a wiring change in the wall. You see there is what is called a switch leg, that is a wire that comes from an outlet and goes to the switch. Other outlets are wired directly to the breaker box without the switch leg wire, therefore they are not controlled by a switch.

Moving this will require moving wires, not just the outlet itself. How do you switch outlets controlled by a light switch?Make sure the switch is off. Then check the outlet with a volt meter to be sure there is no power running to it.Then all you have to do is pull off the wires and replace it with a new plug.Just like you would with a regular outlet.I ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILTY FOR DAMAGE OR INJURY CAUSED BY BEING HAM-HANDED OR JUST PLAIN STUPID.YOU ARE OWN YOUR OWN HERE BUBBA!!How do you switch outlets controlled by a light switch?i assume you are just wanting to replace the outlet if so, locate the breaker that supplies power to the switched outlet/receptacle,

noting the position that the old one is in (ground hole up or down)

remove the cover then the receptacle screws, then carefully pull the receptacle out of the box stretching the wires out so that you can get to them and maintaining the same orientation as it was while it was in the box, then match the new receptacle with the old one, take one wire at a time off the old one and place it on the new one in the same position. push the wires and place the new receptacle in the box and put it all together. job done. How do you switch outlets controlled by a light switch?By the time you figure this out an electrician will have already fixed it.

It's worth the money. How do you switch outlets controlled by a light switch?Well, I guess I will be reading about you in the newspaper if you do not call an electrician. How do you switch outlets controlled by a light switch?Right now you are working off of a split outlet. The outlet that is being powered by the switch has been split or had the metal jumper removed to enable it to have a separate power source. To change the destination of the power from the switch one would have to remove the switchleg from the original outlet and run a new one to the new outlet.

Now if you just want to replace the outlet with another one, that's easy. Turn the breaker off(safety first) then remove the outlet and hook it up like the old one looks. CAUTION , before youscrew the outlet into the wall box, there is a little tab on the righthand side of the outlet between the plug ins thhat will need to be broken with a pair of needlenose pliers or bad things will happen.

It is possible but a pro should do it. I would look for an alternative, perhaps a timer or a remote switch. Good luck.

  • Flickering light, what could be the cause?

I have a hallway light with 2 light switches, one downstairs one upstairs. When the light is on it flickers. The bulbs are incandescent and there are 2 fixtures on the circuit, both flicker at the same time. I have tried replacing the bulbs and the switches but the lights still flicker. When changing the light switches i put a meter on the different leads to make sure there was no power because the voltage detecting device still beeping after i turned the breaker off. The 2 wires that travel between the switches had 10volts on them. I had them disconnected upstairs and downstairs so should be open, I am guessing this is the cause of the flicker but can not figure out how the voltage is getting on the lines. The box at the bottom of the stairs has 3 switches, each switch is on a different circuit. I tried turning off all 3 circuits and the travelers still registered voltage.Flickering light, what could be the cause? Not a short but probably a loose wire or faulty switch, a short will blow the fuse. The voltage you are reading is likely to be spurious voltages, I assume you are using a digital multimeter, this is a downfall with them in that they are very high impedance and can pick up these voltages. If you have a low impedance switch on the multimeter use that and the voltages will disappear.Flickering light, what could be the cause?sounds like you have a short somewhere in the wiring find what else is on those lines and check them out

How to change a Ceiling fixture without a wall switch?

Hello, I am trying to change a chandelier. The old one has a light on/off switch on the fixture itself. There are no wall switches that operate it. My new chandelier doesn't have a light switch. What should I do? I only have one white and one black cable available in the ceiling. I would hate adding any ugly pulls to my beautiful chandelier - are there any other options? Thanks in advance. How to change a Ceiling fixture without a wall switch?First off, all walls don't have fire stops. Borrow or buy a stud finder. (less than 10.00) Locate a stud and cut an opening in the wall the size of the switch box next to the stud. Go to the Attic and drill a 1 inch hole in the sill plate above this wall. Be sure you are centered on the sill so you don't drill a hole thru the wall. Fish the new wire in place and install the new switch box and switch. On the light fixture end, connect the black to the black of the new switch wire. The white of the new switch wire will go to the black of the new fixture. Now connect the white of the fixture to the white of the old wiring. Turn the breaker back on and then turn the light switch on. Pat yourself on the back for saving a pile of money. How to change a Ceiling fixture without a wall switch? You have two options:

First is to run new wiring to a new wall switch and up through the ceiling to the chandelier's junction box. You might be able to drill down through the fireblocks in the wall (horizontal 2x4s between the studs) and fish the wiring down to the switch location. Otherwise, you would have to cut out the drywall enough to expose the studs to run the new wiring.

Your second option is to swag a power cord that's threaded through a chain over to a corner of the room. You install hooks in the ceiling at regular intervals (4 or 5 feet) and hook the links of the chain such that the chain bows down about 2 feet between hooks. Then run the power cord - with a built-in rotary switch - down a corner of the room and along the baseboards to an outlet.

  • Wiring a 3 way ligght switch?

How do i know which wires go where? I have just decorated my staircase and landing and decided to change the light switch at the bottom of my stairs which my kitchen light my hallway light and the upstairs landing light all run from. I have removed the old switch after isolating the electric first. Now iv got a cable with a red and a black wire inside aswel as 3 red wires with 2 of them having black tape on them and the third having grey tape on it and then there is one red wire on its own. Anybody got any ideas!Wiring a 3 way ligght switch?first of all, go carefully.

next, do all of your grounds and connect them to the switches,

if something goes wrong you want to zap the devices, not you.

in one box you should have power supply ( black, white, bare ground) and a 3- wire to the other box (red, black, white, bare ground) I'll call this box-1.

in the other box you should have just the 3- wire ( red, black, white, bare ground) I'll call this box-2.

then you should have a lead to the light with one black, one white, and one ground.

in box-1, connect the black wire from the supply to the black screw on the 3-way switch, pigtail (wire nut together) the white supply wire with the white wire from the light fixture.

still in box-1, connect the white and red from the three wire to the brass screws. pigtail the black from the 3-wire to the black from the light fixture.

in box-2 connect the black wire to the black screw.

connect the red and white wires to the brass screws.

turn the breaker back on ond test the lights and switches.

voila, you have just wired a 3-way switch.

if this does not help, or is confusing, call a pro.Wiring a 3 way ligght switch?Shame I didn't catch your question earlier. I noticed you live in Leeds, I hope Leeds uk. Reason is most of the above answers are for the usa. In the uk we do not normally bring the Neutral through the Light switch and terminology differs. You say 3 way, do you mean 3 gang 2 way, meaning 3 switches 1 for kitchen, 1 for hallway and 1 for stairs, the stairs being 2 way to switch on or off both up and downstairs. In which case you definitely need a tester. Start by identifying the Live, then the 2 switch wires for kitchen and hallway, and I am guessing that the 2 reds with grey tape are the strappers for upstairs. If you are in the uk then you are unlikely to blow fuses by incorrect connections. Unfortunately cannot give any more help as more info requiredWiring a 3 way ligght switch?Hard to tell you much without on the site info, (a picture's worth a thousand words, and multimeter readings are invaluable.) If you don't have much electrical experience or a friend and don't have access to a multimeter, I would call a pro. Really, even if the colors of the wires generally mean something, that's not good enough to go on - you need to KNOW. And taped wires, IMO, do not represent a job done w/ much pride; tape is not a permanent solution.

For diagrams, etc., there are tons of online helps, like http://www.electrical-online.com/wiringd as well as videos, etc. But again, if you don't understand what you're doing, better to get on-site help.

How can I fix a dodgy bathroom light switch?

How to Change an electrical switch?

I changed some regular light switchs to some dimmer switchs and now two outlet plugs in one room don't work. Also in another room one outlet plug does not work. And last I have a pourch in witch the lights dont work. But everey thing else in my house works. The things that don't work don't seem to have anything in common. please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111How to Change an electrical switch? They do have something in common - they're likely wired in series to your breaker box where the first in the series is your dimmer switches (if they work). You're going to have to calculate the load on the particular circuit you have to make sure you can run everything on that particular circuit. if you can you'll have to double check your wiring, and I would suggest you check your ground lead with an ohm-meter.

Should I pull power from an outlet or switch to install a light in the ceiling?

I live in a house where none of the rooms have light fixtures in the ceilings, all of our rooms have to lamps plugged in to the wall outlet and 1 of those outlets is controlled by the light switch. I would like to change this so that when I turn on the switch I can turn on a light fixture in the ceiling, pretty much to update my house. Should I or can I get power from an outlet or wall switch and how can I do this? Any picture diagrams would help me tremendously!!Should I pull power from an outlet or switch to install a light in the ceiling? The work can be done from the switch, if the hot and neutral of the circuit is going to the switch first, then the neutrals will be wirenutted together and the hot will go thru the switch to the wall outlet, a romex from the switch to the new ceiling box can be ran for the new light fixture. If the switch is getting the hot from the wall outlet then the wires going to the switch will not be able to complete the circuit, cause only the hot is being switched at the switch; hot in and load out to the wall outlet. Then you would need to run your new romex from the wall outlet and use the neutral there to complete the circuit. You said that one of those is switched on your outlet, so it sounds like half of your wall outlet is switched and half is hot all the time. In this case it sounds like the wall outlet is feeding the switch so you should run your circuit from the wall outlet and use the switched side of the wall outlet for your circuit to the new ceiling fixture. In either case a licensed and certified electrician should be seriously considered for the work.Should I pull power from an outlet or switch to install a light in the ceiling?Outlet to switch to light. But!! I recommend having an experienced person help with this and make sure you shut off power at breaker box.Should I pull power from an outlet or switch to install a light in the ceiling?contact your local Home Depot. they can help you with all of that easily.

http://thehomedepot.comShould I pull power from an outlet or switch to install a light in the ceiling? What you need is power going to your switch. It can get its power from a receptacle. From the switch a wire goes to the fixture. To control multiple fixtures you tie the fixtures in a series. This is the basic wiring method for lighting.Should I pull power from an outlet or switch to install a light in the ceiling?Depending on how good a DIY person you are - this can be done without much difficult - since your switch controls the outlet - you can make your conection from your outlet to your light fixture - as long as you can fish the wire from the fixture to the outlet - the switch will control your lights as well. Connect Black wire with black and white to white. Cutting the power to this switch is a good idea but if the switch is in off position - you can do your connection - good luckShould I pull power from an outlet or switch to install a light in the ceiling?Power may not be available at the switch. In other words the switch box may only have switch legs in it and no neutral (necessary for a light). Turn the ckt. breaker off that feeds the outlet. Run a 14/2 w/ground romex from the outlet box to the ceiling box. As you remove the outlet you may notice two black wires on the one side. One of those is a constant ''hot'', the other is the ''hot'' from the switch. (Before you started, the lamp that you could control with the switch was plugged into either the top or the bottom holes, these correspond to the top and bottom black wires). Tie the black of your romex to the switched black (or slip it under the same screw) and the white wire of your romex to the white on the other screw of the outlet. Dont forget to tie your grounds in as well. If you only had one black wire upon removing the outlet, then just connect the wires color for color.Should I pull power from an outlet or switch to install a light in the ceiling?Your house is wired in the correct manner, what your saying is you want to customize it. It isn't wired for this so, it's not going to be a small job. It's best to have an electrician do this if your that adamant on doing it.Should I pull power from an outlet or switch to install a light in the ceiling?this is a either or situation, if you have a switched wall outlet , you probly don;t have a neutral wire in the boxfor the switch

you will have a black and a white white being hot and black going to the plug,if you run the wiring in the attic for the light and if you are going to do this thur out the house, i would use a dedicated circuit to the panel box for all the lighting .

Check the plug to see how many wires you have pull the plug WITH power off, you sure see 6 wires three black three whites

one of the whites should be on the brass screw or hot side in this case you need to come from the plug, if yo uhave only two wires in the switch box black and white you have what i just described( NO NEUTRAL IN THE SWITCH BOX). try the dedicated circuit

How to change a dimmer switch back to a regular light switch?

The house we recently purchased has a lot of dimmer switches around and we wanted to convert them back to regular light switches but Im not sure how. I tried to do one on my own but got confused with the wiring. any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!How to change a dimmer switch back to a regular light switch?Three wires, one hot one neutral and one ground. The ground is usually bare wire and screws to the bottom of the light switch, the other two can only be installed two ways, right or wrong and youll know its wrong when you turn the breaker back on and it kicks out on you . Reverse the hot and neutral and try it again. Or if you must, buy an inexpensive tester from you home superstore for about $10. TOuch it on the hot lead and it will beep and identify a hot lead. Now proceed to install the hot wire in hot hole on the light switch labled +

What is the acceleration of light?

In a dark room, I flick on the light switch. Light, traveling at the speed of light, goes from the bulb to the wall. I do not beleive it is possible for something to go from 0 to speed of light instantly. Therefore, the speed of light changed over time - acceleration! How long(short) does it take to go from 0 to speed of light? And is this acceleration constant? What is the acceleration of light?Light travelles at a constant speed in a vacume Therefor no acceleration%26quot; But Light has to get to this speed so what is the inital acceleration of lightWhat is the acceleration of light? If you Take lamda(the diameter of the mass of light particle) and multiply it by the Frequency square that the mass is moving =you have acceleration

What is the acceleration of light?I don't think you quite understand. The light wasn't in existence before you flipped the switch. Then it was in existence, and moved at its velocity. It did not accelerate. What is the acceleration of light?i dont remember specifics, but light does accelerate and it will continue going until its source (i.e the light) can no longer provide power for it to expand. theres a lot of places online u can read up on this...What is the acceleration of light?there is no mass, only energy under wavelength. so no acceleration. What is the acceleration of light?Intensity of light doesn't depend on speed of light..... Light always travel with constant speed. The change in intensity you see is mostly due to warming up of coil in bulb. What is the acceleration of light? The scale at which photons are emitted isn't subject to newtonian physics. What is the acceleration of light?look at this...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_li…What is the acceleration of light? The reason you don't believe that light can go from 0 to 300,000 km/s in an instant is because you are applying your intuition as a human being on rules of motion for MASSLESS elementary particles.

Given that photons (aka light as particles) have zero mass, they don't have inertia to overcome like you and I or anything material that we are accustomed to (i.e. driving a car). So yeah, light goes from 0 to speed of light instantly! There is no acceleration. The speed is constant. BTW, this is a property of the vacuum space, not a property of photons (in other words, all zero mass particles travel at this speed, C, the speed of light in vacuum). What is the acceleration of light?Light travels at the speed of light in vacuum, which is a constant. Constant speed means no acceleration. What is the acceleration of light?Light does not behave like a physical object in this regard. It is energy and so it instantly travels at the highest velocity possible within that medium. (Light does travel more slowly through water and air than through a vacuum.)

On a different topic, you could figure out how long it takes for the light to be generated once the switch is flipped and the electricity heats the filament (or excites the gas in a fluorescent bulb) to generate the photons of light. What is the acceleration of light?0 m/s^2

    lights speed is cte.

A: There is no answer. None of them will actually change it, they'll just examine it, cry briefly, and, as they go off to bed, pray to God about it. After about a week of no change, the Christian will then write into the 700 Club, for help in the matter, sending with the letter a substantial donation that could have been used on the lightbulb replacement. I have 3 wall outlets in the living room and dining room that the top half is live and the bottom half only turns on with a light switch. I want the top and bottom to be live all the time. How do I accomplish this? How do I change a wall outlet to be live all the time when the bottom half is controlled by a light switch?Turn off the power to the circuit that outlet is on.

Remove the outlet - you will see a separate wire going to the switched half (be sure you know which half is switched before doing this). There will be a bridge between the top and bottom half of the outlet that will have been broken out by the electriciain who installed the outlet (thereby allowing one half to be powered all the time and the other half to be switched).

Either bridge the two halves with a separate, short length of wire, or buy a new outlet that has the separation bridge intact. Reconnect the wires as they were (black goes to the side of the outlet with the narrower blade (in the US at least)), and tape the switched wire, or put a spare conical wire nut on the end after you trim it, or both so that it doesn't contact anything inside the box.

Also, if the switch will no longer be used, you might want to remove it as well and put a blank cover plate on it, or remove it completely and plaster over the hole.

Last, if you are uncertain about the existing wiring, or of your connections, you can buy a cheap plug-in LED outlet tester at a hardware store that will indicate if the outlet is wired properly. How do I change a wall outlet to be live all the time when the bottom half is controlled by a light switch?get someone else to do it.How do I change a wall outlet to be live all the time when the bottom half is controlled by a light switch? You can do it in one of 2 ways. You can either purchase new receptacles, or pigtail the wires to reuse the existing wires.

New recpt. method: TURN OFF BREAKER! Test with a small appliance or tester to make sure power is off. Remove outlet from wall and screw a wire nut on the the wire going to the bottom screw. Connect the constant hot (upper) wire to the brass terminal on the new outlet, and the neutral (silver screw) and ground (green screw) wires. Repeat for remaining outlets.

Existing recpt. method: TURN OFF BREAKER! Remove outlet from wall. Disconnect both wires from the brass terminals and put a wire nut on the bottom wire. Cut 2 pieces of wire (not white or green), and using a wire nut connect them to the hot wire. Connect one wire to each of the brass screws on the existing outlet. Repeat for the remaining outlets.
