At-mt swap on civic key is being held in ignition cylinder, WHY?

95 civic was originally an automatic but i converted it to manual trans. I changed the brake light switch then after checking my bulbs, the key wouldn't come out of the ignition. I disconnected the battery then the key was released and I was able to take it out.....HOW do i fix this??At-mt swap on civic key is being held in ignition cylinder, WHY?I don't know the wiring on that, but the key cylinder does not believe the car is in Park so it does not release the key.
