How do you replace a neutral safty switch for a 1989 Jeep Cherokee 4.0?

Sometimes my Jeep want start and the automatic stick shift will not move. Someone told me that it was the neutral safty switch that was faulty. They also told me that i must change the back up light switch as well. Please advise. Thanks to all of you that gave me good advice thus far. It is very helpful. How do you replace a neutral safty switch for a 1989 Jeep Cherokee 4.0?If the stick won't move, it's not the NSS. The interlock cable from the GM steering column to the shifter is out of sync, or the button is not pushing the detent out of the gated shift linkage at the base of the shifter. The NSS is an electrical switch in the passenger side of the transmission that just moves when it's told to.

It's an adventure to get to them, diagnose, and fix. You will definitely need the help of someone 1) experienced 2) who knows about that era of Jeep Cherokees. Obviously not who recommended the repairs you mentioned.
